Response to Act One of King Lear Act One, cuckold One of King Lear opens with Kent, Gloucester and Gloucester’s son, Edmund. Gloucester introduced Edmund to Kent as his “whoreson” (I.i.24) or bastard child. King Lear and hence enters with his three daughters and the two firstborn’s husbands. Lear asks his daughters to discover him which of them loves him most. Both G unityril and Regan flatter him but his youngest and advance daughter, Cordelia, is honest and tells Lear “Unhappy that I am, I cannot heave / My bladder fucus into my m turn outh. I love your Majesty / harmonise to my bond, no to a greater extent nor less.” (I.i.100-102). Enraged by this because of his artificeness to the truth, Lear cuts Cordelia out of her inheritance. Lear then marries off Cordelia to one of her suitors, the King of France, who loves her not for her dowry, but for her frankn ess and goodness.
